Librarianship allows me to to unite my 20+ years customer service experience with my masters in art history, my love of the German language, and my drive and dedication to teaching. My personal focus in librarianship is information meta-literacy and library instruction. As Division Director of Learning Resources at Temple College I am dedicated to providing effective information literacy instruction to guide my students in their research endeavors and beyond.

Teaching Philosophy

As a grad student and researcher in the field of art history I came to a profound realization that continues to guide my teaching practice. I realized that as dedicated as I am to the pursuit of information and conducting research my true passion lies in guiding others through this process. As a result, my teaching shifted from a discipline focus to that of information literacy.

Over the past decade the expectations for college students have evolved with the proliferation of digital technology and the shift in information consumption and knowledge production. Students are exposed to an ever-expanding variety of information types and formats. They are required to evaluate and engage this information critically. I strive to support students through this process of knowledge curation.  As an academic librarian the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and the idea of meta-literacy guide my teaching practice. These models support my goal of motivating and empowering students to creatively engage with the research process and to confidently and ethically use information in their academic careers and beyond.

My artistic background and practice informs all that I do. The best metaphor I can imagine for teaching and learning is the recursive journey that is the artistic process. You begin with an idea and proceed with openness and curiosity. The idea grows and changes throughout the process and requires revision, often a willingness to start over from scratch, before a finished product is achieved that embodies the artist’s original intention.

My goal is to guide my students through this process of discovery and creation while supporting them through the sticking points, the thresholds of integrating new knowledge and skills. To this end I focus on creating learner-centered environments that incorporate inclusivity principles from the Universal Design for Learning model and active, group-based learning techniques.

I am dedicated to supporting diversity and inclusion in my teaching practice. It is my belief that diversity and inclusion should function as integral components of our culture, society, governance, and education. At Kellogg Community College, The University of Texas Libraries, and Temple College I have had the opportunity to work with and teach a diverse community of students. I learned from these experiences that it is our responsibility as individuals to ensure diversity and inclusion in our personal and professional lives. I strive to provide inclusive learning environments, for example, through online learning initiatives where students can participate and contribute collaboratively from non-traditional spaces.

Student Projects

Capstone Project

This project focuses on the redesign and creation of course content for the School of Information’s online course INF303D: Academic Success in the Digital University in collaboration with my colleague Molly McGee. The first phase of this project involved research and assessment of instructional design strategies for online learning and information meta-literacy. Team Based Learning, Universal Design for Learning, and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy were identified as actionable models. The second phase is focused on the creation of course content including learning outcomes, active learning exercises, and assessment for the information cycle, research and reference, scholarly communication, copyright, and academic integrity modules for this course.

Art, Criticism and Society

This guide was created to assist with the information needs for UGS 302: Art, Criticism and Society. This guide can be used as a companion to a library instruction session and as a stand-alone reference resource.

Digital Archiving and Preservation – Faculty Collaboration

This project  involved a team-based approach to facilitate the migration of University of Texas, Anthropology faculty member Suzanne Seriff's exhibition data from her personal computer archive to a secure digital repository instance. I created the DSpace hierarchy tailored to the specifications of her exhibition data in preparation for migration.

Independent Study – Threshold Concepts within a Discipline

This project was a collaboration with University of Texas Art History faculty member Dr. Linda Henderson to establish preliminary threshold concepts for the discipline of art history. I utilized concept mapping to map threshold concepts to graduate level art history seminar with the goal of identifying key points in the course where meta-literacy methods, tools, and instruction could support content delivery. This project was presented at the 2018 Greater Austin Area Information Literacy Symposium as Threshold Concepts, Meta-Literacy, and the Graduate Art History Seminar: A Case Study.

Wassily Kandinsky, Rudolf Steiner, and the Missing Object

This thesis examines the resonances between the thought of philosopher and Theosophist/Anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) and Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) by locating Steiner, and in turn Kandinsky, in the emerging occult movement at the turn of the twentieth century.
